Inocybe vaccina is distinctive because of the rusty orange or bright orange tints in the cap. Such tones are unusual in Inocybe. The cap is small to medium-sized, smooth to finely scaly, and often with a wavy paler-colored margin. Odor is lacking or faintly spermatic. Gills are pale grayish when young and darken to olivaceous brown. The stipe is whitish at first, then darkens to yellow-brown, powdery over almost its entire length, and has a slightly thickened base. The spores are smooth, almond- to orange-seed-shaped, 8.5--11.5 x 4.5--6.5 µm; cheilocystdia and pleurocystidia are thick-walled, with crystals encrusting the narrowed tips.
